Overview

Situated in the far southwestern part of Tibet, Mount Kailash is a uniquely shaped, pyramid-like peak that holds deep spiritual significance across multiple religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Bon. In Hindu belief, the mountain is regarded as the sacred residence of Lord Shiva, while Tibetan Buddhists revere it as Kangri Rinpoche, meaning “Precious Snow Mountain.” Followers of Jainism and the Bon tradition also consider this site a place of spiritual awakening and enlightenment.

Rising to an elevation of over 6,000 meters, Mount Kailash is often described as the spiritual axis of the Earth. The region is further sanctified by the presence of four important rivers—the Brahmaputra, Ghaghara, Indus (Sindhu), and Sutlej—which originate in the surrounding area and flow across different parts of the Indian subcontinent and beyond.

The sacred practice of walking around the mountain, known as the Kora (Parikrama), is believed to hold immense spiritual value. Completing this circumambulation is considered highly auspicious, bringing blessings and positive karmic merit. For those unable to undertake the trek on foot, arrangements for horseback travel are available, allowing pilgrims to still participate in this significant ritual.

Close to Mount Kailash lies the revered Lake Manasarovar, a high-altitude freshwater lake regarded as one of the holiest water bodies. It is believed that taking a dip in its waters can cleanse the accumulated sins of many lifetimes, while consuming its water is thought to bring one closer to divine consciousness and the abode of Lord Shiva. The lake is also associated with spiritual legends that emphasize its purity and divine connection.

Each year, thousands of devotees from across the world undertake this pilgrimage, drawn by faith, tradition, and the desire to experience a journey that has been followed for centuries. The Kailash–Manasarovar Yatra continues to remain one of the most profound spiritual journeys, offering both inner reflection and a deep connection with nature and divinity.
